Wallaby skipper Stirling Mortlock is set to miss at least half the 2008 Super 14 season with a shoulder injury which requires a full reconstruction.
The Wallabies and Brumbies centre had been carrying the injury since
his side's final pool match against Wales in Cardiff.
Mortlock had scans on his shoulder on Monday and it was confirmed he will now undergo the third shoulder reconstruction of his career.
"It's disappointing to miss a game at any stage but to miss a series of matches at the beginning of a season is particularly frustrating,'' Mortlock said.
"We've got an outstanding, young squad for next season and I'm really looking forward to being part of what will be a very exciting season for the Brumbies. But in the meantime, it's a matter of getting the surgery done, getting started on my rehab and getting back on the paddock as soon as I can.''
The loss of Mortlock for the entire season would come as a cruel blow to the Brumbies who have already lost the services of veterans George Gregan and Stephen Larkham.
