Andy Gomarsall believes the Wallabies already have a ready-made

England halfback Andy Gomarsall believes the Wallabies already have a ready-made replacement for George Gregan in Matt Giteau and that he is the obvious candidate to wear the No 9 jersey.

Gomarsall rates Giteau at No 9 Gomarsall said he had run into Bob Dwyer on a flight to Australia and they had shared similar views on where Giteau was best suited in the backline.

"His thoughts were to go with Matt Giteau and I pretty much concur with that, I think he's a fantastic talent," Gomarsall said to the AAP.

"It's just a fact he's so good at inside centre or fly half as well that there's the problem, who do you put in that position that could have such an affect that he has there, scrum-half might almost be a wasted opportunity for him.

"I don't know for a fact, time will tell on that, but I wish I was as bloody talented as him that I could play at inside centre, ten and number nine."

Gomarsall said that England had targeted Gregan at the breakdown during the 12-10 World Cup quarter-final victory.

"When you've got such a class team as Australia and great players with it, for us getting to George Gregan was the main thing about stopping Australia playing," Gomarsall said.

"His record speaks for itself, the guy has been around for so long, very experienced, to get to him kind of stops Australia and that meant the breakdown had to become a contest."

Gomarsall also said he rated Gregan "the greatest scrum-half ever in world rugby".

"I was pretty emotional after that (quarter-final) I played against George and came off second best too many times," Gomarsall said.
